For the average player who comes to Las Vegas only a few times a year, this "crash course" is all you will ever need to see substantial savings in your bankroll. For the more serious Las Vegas gamblers, we recommend checking out your neighborhood book store for more in -depth information.

Gambling, particularly in Las Vegas, is a very complex topic, especially for the accountants and mathematicians. Trying to beat the Las Vegas casinos enough to support one's self takes months of study, or more, lots of practice, and a bankroll big enough to over come the occasional long dry spell.

However, cutting the house edge to an almost break even game is really fairly easy. Easy enough, that after reading the next few pages, you'll have the resources necessary to wage war with the Las Vegas casinos on a virtually even battlefield.

The single most important aspect for the successful gambler is choosing the right game! We can not stress that enough! To choose the best game, you need to know the facts. These are the numbers the Las Vegas casinos use, that the P.H.D.'s use, and they are the ones that you should use, also.

What you should notice is that there are two games that can pay back over 99%: video poker and blackjack. For this reason, they are the two that we discuss. The reason for the higher payback potential is simple. They both use decks of cards which give players choices and decisions in strategy. No other games offer these choices, (except baccarat and poker, and they are far too complex for this forum).

Why does this matter? That's easy. All most all gamblers are so bad at making these decisions that the house creates an almost break even game and it is the players' mistakes that gives the house it's advantage. They have to do this so the player doesn't lose too much. Casinos realize that if a player is wiped out to quickly, he'll lose, but he (she) will probably never come back. But, if he (she) loses at just the right rate that gambling is fun, that player will return time and again, only to lose almost every time. It is this flaw, created by other player's mistakes that educated gamblers have learned to exploit.

So what does a break even game really mean? It doesn't mean that you will break even every time you play! Actually, a very low percentage of players will be exactly even over time. What it does mean is you'll have as good of a chance of winning as you do of losing.

For example: You bet a friend $1 on an honest coin toss. This is a break even bet. But after only one toss, it is impossible to break even! (Actually, it will be impossible to break even on any odd number of tosses.)  You will either win the $1 or lose it, but you will not break even! What you really have is a break even shot of winning (or losing). That's what this guide intends to give you: an almost 50/50 shot at beating the casinos, instead of the less than 10% chance the majority of gamblers have of winning. It really pays to be educated.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that the difference between a 95% payback and a 100% payback is only $5 from a $100 bankroll. Nothing is further from the truth!!! The 5% is calculated on your action, not your bankroll. "Action" is the  amount of money that is actually played. For example, a typical quarter slot player may have $300-400 per hour in action, and maybe with only a $50 bankroll. For example, you start with a roll of 40 quarters ($10) and you play each one one time. After you're done, you lose, but you still have 34 quarters left. So you play them, and you're now down to 29 quarters, and so on... This is how only $10 in bankroll generates many times that amount in action. Here, you have only played three rounds and your action is now already more than $25 (40 quarters played + 34 quarters played + 29 quarters played).

In the above example, if the player has a 5% disadvantage, he should expect to lose $15-25 per hour! This is 5% percent of his action, not 50 cents which would be 5% of the $10 bankroll.

By the way, if the above player only lost at a rate of $10 an hour, he got lucky! When you play at a disadvantage, you can actually beat the odds and be lucky, while still losing! Luck is for losers. Winners rely on knowledge.

Although both video poker and blackjack offer about the same pay back, fluctuations for video poker are usually much higher. This is due to video poker's "jack-pot syndrome". Video poker has a jack-pot that blackjack doesn't offer. This means that a video poker player will generally lose more per hour than the mathematical expectation until he hits a jack-pot. This royal jack-pot is needed to even out the expectations over time.

If you plan on using our Comp Secrets Guide to beat the casinos out of every possible free comp, we strongly suggest playing only blackjack, for reasons discussed in that web page.

So, how did we come up with the following basic strategies? Honestly, it wasn't us. Basic Strategy was first developed almost 40 years ago, and nobody has been able to really improve on it since. Not casino accountants, math professors, statistical experts or even computer geeks. These basics strategies have been tested and retested and have stood the test of time. They are correct.

How'd they do it? They took virtually every single situation and ran it through a computer literally millions of times (by now, probably billions), to find the best strategy for each and every situation.

Then, they calculated the results from each combination (i.e. for 15 : [ 5-5-5]  [7-8]  or even [10-2-2-A]). In this particular example, they found that, even though a 15 vs. a 10 is an overall loser, you'd lose less in the long run if you were to hit your 15 instead of stay.

These results are now what is known as basic strategy. Basic strategy is the scientific and mathematical way to achieve the maximum pay back with out counting cards. The casinos use math and science. Most gamblers use hunches and feelings. Who wins more? Which will you use?
